Glucose is our body's main source of energy, but its elevation as well as its decrease to levels well below normal can cause problems in our body.
Why should we control its level?
Most cells in our body use glucose as a source of energy, especially those in our brain. That is why we must always have a minimum of blood glucose, so that none of our organs can be affected. Being below 70 mg would be hypoglycemia, and above 110 mg would be hyperglycemia. The latter is the one diagnosed with diabetes.
In a person with a functional and healthy metabolism, glucose levels remain relatively stable over time thanks to the action of insulin together with other hormones.
